When planing any concreting job, the most important part is the excavation. Getting your levels requires you need to subtract or multiply the thickness of your finished concrete level witch will determined the excavation required.
Don't forget to allow for crush rock of about 25/50 mm thick
If you're concreting a path area prepare for 75 mm thick concrete plus your crush rock
If preparing a drive way you must prepare for a min 100 mm of concrete and adding depth of 25/50mm crush rock for strength to take the wait of you cars but all theses are only guides for min requirement
When your excavating for concreting or any other project that requires a excavation make shore that the areas your preparing are free of grass and that you get to stable ground as this can affect composition of your concrete
All so if the ground is wet or soft on most cases theses areas need removing depending on projects at hand as this can all so effect the surface you're preparing
If you're left with deep over excavation fill with stable rock or clay
Once your excavation is completed use your crush rock generally a 20 mm blue metal of a recycled brick concrete from your nursery
Shovel into place to fill holes and to get to pre concrete hight and rake to a relative level area
In most cases your base should be compacted witch you can hire from hardware shops
If under taking any excavation you should seek advice from a professional
And always dial before you dig
